I was one of the finalists in the Aarikka x YFD ‘Leikki ei lopu’ (=play never ends ) Design Contest with my jewellery set Valona. It was awarded with an honorable mention in August 2024.
70 years old Aarikka is a Finnish lifestyle design brand known for round shapes, crisp Scandinavian style and wood. The purpose of the contest was to find new products for Aarikka’s selection, while giving an opportunity for emerging designers to get their work seen and collaborate with the beloved brand.
Contest in numbers: 376 contest entries, 3 categories (jewellery / accessory / home), 3 finalists in each category.
My contest entry, Valona-jewellery set, includes a ring, pendant / necklace and earrings.
The jewellery set was inspired by Aarikka’s timeless candlesticks. The one wearing the jewellery, lights up the room like a candle flame. The name of the set Valona means ‘as a light’ in English.
The shapes of the jewellery are also stimulating. They are not only beautiful to look at, but also interesting to touch. Therefore the play never ends.
My goal was to design something that is easily recognizable as a product of Aarikka, but also something that plays with familiar shapes and symmetries. Inspired by the words of Aarikka’s founder Kaija: ‘Every object has existed before. Forms repeat themselves. Experiment change’.
